Sudan to Expand in Wheat Cultivation in Northern, River Nile States

Khartoum – Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation confirmed its commitment to provide political and material support to the agricultural process in order to become a major supporter to economic growth in Sudan.
In the workshop, which was hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, in cooperation with the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD), on growing of wheat using groundwater in the Northern and the River Nile states, State Minister, Dr. Jafar Ahmed Abdullah said that wheat has become the main crop for food in Sudan .
Abdullah disclosed that Sudan has started expansion in wheat production locally to reach self-sufficiency and to reach food security in the Arab world.
He said that the initiative of the Sudan on Arab food security, launched by the President of the Republic, built on the potential of food production in Sudan.
For his part, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Mohammed Hassan revealed that Sudan is preparing, these days, to host the Arab food funds.
 He said that the said workshop was held at a convenient time to develop good study of groundwater in the Northern and River Nile states for expansion in the cultivation of wheat, pointing out that this study will contribute to the process of self-sufficiency.
