The 17th of Ramadan: Defining Moments
Muslims all over the world remember many important incidents the happened in the history of Islam during the month of Ramadan. But two events are remembered more than the many other ones:
On the 17th of Ramadan, year 13 before the migration of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) to Al-Madinah, The first verse in the Book of Allah (The Quran) was revealed. Ayah 185 of Surratt Albagara says:
“Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Quran, as a guide to mankind, also Clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting, but if anyone is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put you to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.”
In Ramadan the first Surra of the Quran “Al-Alag or Igraa” was revealed:
“Proclaim! (Or Read!) In the name of thy Lord and Cherisher Who created.
Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood: Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful, He Who taught (the use of) the Pen, Taught man that which he knew not…etc.”
That was the beginning of Islamic call (Dawa’a), and Muslims consider it a defining moment in the history of Islam. The other defining event in the history of Islam was the battle of Badr, which also happened on the 17th of Ramadan the 2nd year of the Hijrah, corresponding to the 13th of March 624.
The Battle of Badr has shown the Islamic conception of the factors of victory and defeat in a practical and realistic way. It established that victory is not decided by numbers, mechanisms or means. Victory is granted by God to his faithful believers. The numbers of the fighters of Guraish were three times more than Muslim fighters who won the battle. God says in the Holy Quran, Ayah 160 Al Omran:
“If Allah helps you none can overcome you: if He forsakes you, who is there, after that, that can help you? In Allah, then, let Believers put their trust.”
