Menotti: Messi Cannot Win on His Own
Despite being regarded by many as the best player in the world, Messi has struggled to be as impactful for Argentina as he is for his club Barcelona. Menotti shared with Gazeta Esportiva that the Argentinean national team's underachievement in recent years cannot come down solely on the playmaker's shoulders.
"Leo is not going to save the Argentine team at the World Cup, Messi alone guarantees nothing. You cannot win a World Cup with one player," he stated.
"Messi could be the difference and we are lucky to have him, but if we do not assemble a team, Messi is not going to save us in 2014."
The former Independiente boss tasted World Cup success when he led Argentina to glory in 1978. However, he chose to reference South American rival Brazil's triumph at the tournament in 1970 as an analogy for Messi's situation.
"In the 1970 World Cup, the most brilliant player I saw was Pele for Brazil, but he was not alone. With him were Rivelino, Clodoaldo, Tostao, Jairzinho and Gerson," Menotti said.
