Opposition Fails to Sign “Democratic Alternative”

Sudanese opposition leaders made up of National Consensus Forecs Council in a meeting last Tuesday had failed to sign two documents on a democratic alternative and constitutional declaration proposed for running the country in a transitional period following bringing down the regime, according to the opposition plan.
The signed was delayed for next week under pretext of further consultation and scrutinizing the wording
Learnt sources told Ashrooq TV that Hassan Al-Turabi, leader of Popular Congress Party (PCP), walked out before the meeting was called off amid signs of disagreement with the opposition leaders on including the National Umma and Democratic Unionist parties. The same sources said that Turabi was of the view that involving the two parties should be subject to further consultations.
The opposition constitutional declaration provides for sovereignty council, cabinet, and a legislative council. It also agreed to an opposition democratic alternative for a three-year interim period. In its transitional program, the opposition agreed to abort current federal system.
Among attendants of the ,meeting were Mohamed Mukhtar, Ali Al-Rayah, Abdel Aziz Khalid, Ibrahim Al-Sheikh, Hala Abdel Halim, Farouq Abu Eissa and Sidiq Yousif.
Earlier at a separate meeting, the opposition leaders agreed in principle the two document of their latest meeting at the premises of National Umma Party, where they set June 26 as date for final signing.
