Expert Enumerates Iodine Deficiency Risks

Khartoum – Regional Representative, Middle East and North Africa (MENA) International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency (ICCIDD), Dr. Ezzeddin Sharief Hussein said Iodine Deficiency is the single most common cause of preventable mental retardation and brain damage in the world.  It also decreases child survival, causes goiters and impairs growth and development.
Dr. Ezzeddin Sharief Hussein told Sudan Vision on the occasion of the workshop of popularization Iodized salt organized in Khartoum, yesterday, that Iodine Deficiency in pregnant women causes miscarriages, stillbirth and other complications.
Iodine Deficiency was once considered a minor problem, causing goiter, an unsightly but seemingly benign costetic blemish. It is now known that the effect on the developing brain is more deadly, constitute a threat to the social and economic development of many countries, he said.
Regional Representative said they appreciated the efforts of Sudan in eradicating the Iodine Deficiency in the country, adding that Red Sea State has pioneering the use of Iodized Salt.
The International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (ICCIDD) is the only international organization specifically constituted to promote optimal iodine nutrition and elimination of Iodine Deficiency.
