World Health Assembly Endorses WHO's Role as Health Cluster Leading Agency
Khartoum – Federal Minister of Health Bahr Addin Abu Garda who has participated in the 65th World Health Assembly in Geneva said the meeting has discussed the challenges and opportunities facing public health today.
The Minister said in a press conference last Thursday that the member states emphasized that WHO should increase the focus on the social, economic and environmental determinants of health.
It is worth noting that the World Health Assembly the meeting has adopted a resolution reaffirming the central role of health in humanitarian response and strongly endorsing WHO's role as health cluster lead agency. It calls for member states and donors to allocate sufficient resources for health sector activities during humanitarian emergencies and for strengthening WHO's capacity to exercise its role as lead agency both at global and country levels.
The resolution also calls on WHO to provide member states and humanitarian partners with predictable support during emergencies, by coordinating rapid assessments, the development of strategies and action plans, and monitoring the health situation.
Member states endorsed the report on the progress and achievements of the health-related Millennium Development Goals and health goals after 2015.
