American Corner in Atbara 

Atbara - The General Manager of The Ministry of Culture, Information and Telecommunications in The River Nile State, Prof. Awadel-Karim B. Suleiman has received in his office a delegation from the United States Embassy in Khartoum headed by Mr. Mark Wildermuth, Deputy of Public of Services Officer And Ph.D. Abdullahi Dirar, The IRC Director representing the Public Affairs Section and USAID on Wednesday May 9, 2012. The delegation has also met with The Consulter of The RN State for Foreign Affairs Ambassador, Assadig Al-Magly in the Ministry of Culture. The delegation discussed with the Ministry and the Ambassador Almagly the Memorandum of Understanding to be signed between the Embassy and the Ministry. After that, they visited Atbara Central Library where the Embassy is planning to open an "American Corner". The American Corner is a small library within a functioning library where the Embassy provides books, magazines, DVDs, internet services freely to the general public. The delegation reviewed the requirements of upgrading the library buildings before opening the Corner in the near future. Meanwhile, The Education USA Advisor of the Embassy Miss Mary Mendenhall made a presentation to the staff and students of the Faculty of Engineering, Nile Valley University during the visit. More than 100 persons attended the presentation. The delegation also donated some books to the University and to Atbara Central Library.  
The delegation agreed with the Ministry of Culture on a timetable for implementing the American Corner in Atbara. It is worth mentioning that American Embassies throughout the world run over 400 American Corners. The Atbara American Corner would be the first in Sudan.  In addition, the delegation added that The Corner will be a suitable venue for hosting events arranged by the Embassy as outreach activities to Sudanese living outside Khartoum. The events may include different activities such as English Language classes, film shows, and lectures by visiting Americans and by embassy staff.
