SMS :ALMT Must Continue Its Mission
According to the UN estimations 5 thousands civilians have been killed at the hands of Syrian armed forces since the outbreak of popular uprising in Syria in March 2011, and almost other 300 civilians have been killed since the beginning of mission of the Arab League monitors team two weeks ago to oversee implementation of an agreement to halt deadly force against protesters.
The Syrian opposition said the mission of the Arab league monitoring team (ALMT) has failed. Many observers see that ALMT failed to stop killing, and they point out to the increasing numbers of death since the team arrived in Syria .
I personally believe that the ALMT has not failed in its mission so far and the time is early to judge it , but mistakes had been made by the team during its mission , and that is in my view point because the team have no previous experience , the fact is that their mission was the first of its kind for the Arab League .
Some desperate parts in the Syrian opposition call on the Arab League to withdraw the ALMT , they called for military intervention by the international community . I think it is important to let the team continue its mission and efforts , but it is necessary to support it with technical assistants from the UN . The team must be strengthened by Arab technicians from the UN to avoid some sensitive considerations, and to enable the team to achieve its mission properly, it must work independently away from the Syrian authorities, and in accordance with the Protocol signed between the Arab League and the Syrian government, and the team must be well equipped and supported with good transportation and all means of facilities and required logistics.
I believe the Syrian government was behind the blasts took place since the arrival of the ALMT in Syria; it aims at supporting its assertion that the unrest in Syria stems from the actions of the so called extremists groups and armed gangs. That will not be stopped unless the team is supported and backed by experts and technicians from the UN.
