From Time to Time: What Is the Alternative?
If we are to be honest and realistic about the so-called Arab spring we would first rename it and call it Islamic spring instead. All the stories represented by the media pointed to the youth efforts on the face book as the mere or at least the major power behind the revolt to the extent that some people went so far and called it youth revolution or face book revolution. In all the countries that witnessed the Arab or Islamic spring the ultimate target is to go to ballot boxes and practice a real, free and honest elections.
So when elections were held there emerged the real power behind the spring and the epicenter of the revolt; the Islamists. The Islamist parties proved that it is high time for them to rule their countries and that they are the most organized and the most popular parties in the region and what they gained in those elections is just the harvest of several decades of hard work under internal and external pressure. The same scenario will definitely be applicable for any attempt of change in other regional countries.
Western countries need to be realistic and deal with this new wave of Islam and to respect the choice of people and to stop playing games behind the scenes. They also need to think of the obvious alternative which is no doubt the extremism. They know of course the threat of extremism and the fact that its organizations are building up and growing bigger and bigger and expanding their areas of existence. Other regional countries need to learn the lesson for a lower price and prepare themselves to warmly receive that wave without any kind of delay or procrastination.
